Christ the Door

Mosaic
St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice

Jesus and Mary are labeled in Greek as conventional, but Mark is labeled in Latin. In the open book are the words ego sum hostium per me si quis introierit salvabitur et pascua inveniet, "I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved and he shall find pastures" (from John 10:9). The inscription in the frame begins ianua sum vite per me mea…, "I am the door of life, through me my…" followed by a word I cannot make out. The word after that is venite, which means "come ye."
